Consider a yacht moving through ocean waters. The majestic boat leaves a large wake as it slices through the blue. The wake affects other small boats and paddle boarders, marine animals and fish. Every leader is a yacht on the ocean of their business. What does your wake look like?
The wake a yacht leaves behind it is two-sided. So, then, is the “wake” a leader leaves. This wake is composed of two factors: results and relationships.
The operative questions that will judge your success are:
“did you get great results?” and, “how were the people affected who were under your leadership?”
To be an effective leader, you must focus actively on both sides of your wake, continually asking “what results am I getting,” and, “how am I affecting the people I lead?”
